Sports injuries refer to the various types of injuries that occur when a person is exercising or playing a sport. The injuries can happen as a result of many factors like improper training, not handling oneself efficiently, carelessness, physically unfit, imbalance of the body, accident etc. Apart from these factors, injuries can also happen if not warming up or stretching oneself before beginning the exercise or a sport. The injuries can be acute and even chronic depending upon the severity of the injury.
Sports injuries typically include the musculoskeletal system comprising the muscles, bones and tissues such as the cartilage. Traumatic brain injury and spinal cord accidents do happen in sports but on rare occasions.
Below is a list of most common sports injuries:
Knee is the most commonly injured joint that is primarily due to its weight bearing capacity. Knee injuries can range from mild to severe due to their complex structure. Damage to the cartilage or ligaments and bone bruises are known to be the most severe knee injuries. Certain less severe yet painful knee injuries are runner’s knee injury, iliotibial band syndrome and tendinitis also known as tendinosis. Knee injuries can result from a number of factors such as improper landing of the knee after a jump or a kick, knee twist, blow of the knee, no proper warm-up, running too hard and too long etc.
Sprain and strain
When the band of connective tissues joining one bone to another called the ligament is stretched or is torn, a person is said to suffer from sprain injuries. The body areas that are most vulnerable to sprain are knees, ankles and wrists.
When the cord of tissues that connects the muscles to its bones which are known as muscles or tendons are being torn, pulled or twisted, the person is said to suffer from a sprain. Sprain results from over contraction and overstretching.
Fractures are damages or cracks to the bone (bone break) that are caused either due to sudden injuries or is as a result of long time stress to the bone. Fractures can be acute and stress where bone damage depends upon the intensity of the injury. You can manage acute pain with soma which is preferred by most of the pain medication doctors.
Muscles in our body parts are bound by compartments which are formed by a tough membrane called fascia. When these muscles become swollen due to an injury, they interfere with the nerves and blood vessels and damage themselves. The resultant pain suffered by an individual is known to be as compartment syndrome. Pain relievers can be used to treat such nerve related pain. Tramadol for neuropathic pain found to be most successful and taken by most of the pain sufferers.
Achilles tendon injuries
When the tendon that connects between the calf muscles and the back of the heel is scratched, hurt or torn, then the person is known to suffer from Achilles tendon injury. These injuries can become so intense that they even devastate an athlete’s career. When a tendon is weakened or badly injured, trauma can make the worsened condition to rupture all the more.
Shin splints occur when a person suffers certain sort of leg pain, pain along with tibia or shin bone, pain on large bone that’s at the front of the lower leg (below the knee) and also in foot, ankle and other leg parts. Shin splints occur as a result of number of factors such as overuse of incorrect use of legs, improper training or warm-up, over jumping or running, shoes without enough support or comfort etc.
Dislocations in a person happen when the two bones that are connected together forming a joint become separated. Sports such as football, basketball, sports that requires excessive stretching, falling or causing high impact to the player can result in dislocated joints. A dislocated joint is a major medical condition that requires immediate attention and treatment.
